Paving sinks, rocks and stains for one reason: what's underneath it was rushed.
We dig to the right depth, compact a proper sub-base, set the falls away from the house and bed the slabs on full mortar or the correct bedding layer. It's the slowest, least photogenic part of the job and it's the whole job.
Porcelain, natural stone, block paving, resin bound and concrete, with edge restraints, drainage channels and compliant run-off where the rules ask for it. Devon rain is a proper test rig, so we build for it.
After that it needs a wash occasionally and nothing else. That's rather the point.
Full mortar bed, primed backs, tight consistent joints. The finish everyone wants and the one least forgiving of a rushed base.
Sorted for thickness, laid on full bed, pointed with the right compound so it does not blow out in frost.
Excavated to depth, compacted sub-base, edge restraints concreted in, kiln dried sand and a final compaction.
Laid over a sound permeable base. Smooth, quiet and easy to keep clean, provided what is underneath is right.
Reinforced, jointed and finished for cars rather than wheelbarrows, with falls set away from the house.
Channel drains, permeable build-ups and compliant run-off, plus liaison on dropped kerb applications.

Dig deep enough, put in the right depth of compacted MOT type 1, and compact it in layers rather than all at once. That is what carries the car and stops the settlement that makes a driveway look tired after three winters. Skip it and the surface has to do a job it was never designed for.
Then falls and edges. Water must run away from the house at a consistent fall, and every paved area needs a restrained edge or the whole field of blocks slowly walks outwards. If run-off cannot soak away on site, the build-up needs to be permeable or drained, which is also what the rules ask for on front gardens.
